Tusker face Mara Sugar as Sofapaka brace for APS Bomet in key weekend fixtures

Tusker FC travel to Awendo seeking to arrest a worrying slump after suffering back-to-back losses against Police FC and, most recently, Gor Mahia.

The FKF Premier League enters another crucial weekend with two key fixtures on Saturday, headlined by Tusker’s trip to Awendo to face Mara Sugar and Sofapaka’s home clash against an improving APS Bomet side.

Tusker FC travel to Awendo seeking to arrest a worrying slump after suffering back-to-back losses against Police FC and, most recently, Gor Mahia. The Brewers, now sitting 10th on the table with 12 points from 10 games, recognise that another slip could drag them deeper into mid-table obscurity.

Their latest defeat came during a historic 100th league meeting with Gor Mahia, where they fell 1-0 at Kasarani. The match was decided early, just eight minutes in, after a misjudged back-pass handed Gor a gift of a goal.

Despite attacking pressure from Oalo, Oruko, and substitute Kapaito in the second half, Tusker were unable to break Sirkal’s defensive shape. Gor’s tactical maturity and set-piece threat ensured they protected the narrow margin to the end.

While Tusker lick their wounds, hosts Mara Sugar are dealing with their own setback.

They, too, are coming off a loss, falling 1-0 to KCB in Awendo, a match that was decided inside the first minute when December Kisakah punished a defensive lapse to score what may go down as the season’s fastest goal. Mara battled throughout the match but struggled to break down a disciplined KCB side that rotated intelligently to preserve their lead.

Mara Sugar sit 12th on the log with 11 points from nine matches and will view Saturday’s home tie as an opportunity to bounce back and climb away from the lower half. With both teams desperate to rediscover form, the Awendo contest promises intensity, urgency and tactical discipline from the opening whistle.

The second fixture of the day brings together two sides coming off contrasting midweek fortunes. Sofapaka return to action after a 3–1 defeat to Ulinzi Stars, while APS Bomet arrive buzzing with confidence after stunning Gor Mahia 4–1 at Nyayo Stadium, their second win since earning promotion.

Sofapaka made a bright start in their previous match, taking a 7th-minute lead through Douglas Kibet, but Ulinzi regrouped and overpowered them with goals from Masuta Masita and a brace from Paul Okoth. Batoto Ba Mungu now sit 14th with 11 points from 10 matches and are under pressure to stop their slide.

They face an APS Bomet side that announced itself loudly on Tuesday. Despite conceding early to George Amonno, Bomet roared back with a hat-trick from former AFC Leopards forward Hansel

Ochieng struck in the 39th, 42nd and 75th minutes before Rodgers Kipkemoi sealed a remarkable 4-1 result. The win forced Gor to reconsider their venue plans for the upcoming derby and sent shockwaves across the league.

With two victories already under their belt, APS Bomet are fast shedding their “newcomers” tag and proving they can trouble even the league’s heavyweights. Their pace, pressing, and confidence make them a dangerous opponent for any side, especially one trying to stabilise like Sofapaka.
