Betty Bayo’s family petitions ODPP for independent inquest over her death, alleged cover-up

The family of late singer Betty Bayo has petitioned the ODPP to order an independent inquest into her death, citing withheld medical records, missing autopsy details and a hurried burial.

The family of the late gospel singer Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, popularly known as Betty Bayo, has petitioned the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to open an inquest into her mysterious death.

Through their lawyers, Omenke Andeje & Company Advocates, the family says the circumstances surrounding her death raise serious concerns that warrant an independent inquiry.

In a letter dated 9 December 2025, addressed to the Director of Public Prosecutions and copied to the Inspector-General of Police, the firm — acting for the deceased’s mother, Joyce Wairimu Mbugua — states that the family strongly suspects “an evil hand” in the young woman’s death, insisting she had no known medical complications.

Several red flags

The family says several red flags emerged after her death. They allege that, despite repeated requests, they were denied access to crucial medical records detailing what treatment she had been receiving.

They further claim that they were not provided with the autopsy report, raising fears that critical information may have been withheld.

The lawyers also argue that the deceased was hurriedly buried, a move they believe was intended to conceal facts that could have shed light on the cause of death.

Citing Articles 26(3), 35 and 157(4) of the Constitution, the family is now seeking a directive from the DPP for the Inspector-General to commence an inquest to establish whether the death was natural, accidental or the result of foul play.

The ODPP and the police are yet to respond to the family’s request.
