Heavy rains and low temperatures expected in several counties – Met Department

Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected from Friday through Tuesday in several regions, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and parts of northwestern Kenya.

Heavy rains and biting cold are set to sweep across parts of Kenya, with Nairobi, Kisumu, and Nakuru among the regions expected to experience wet and chilly conditions over the next five days.

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department’s latest weather forecast issued on Thursday, July 17, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected from Friday through Tuesday in several regions, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and parts of northwestern Kenya.

Counties in the Lake Victoria Basin and parts of the Rift Valley are set to receive significant rainfall, especially in the afternoons, with the department warning that the showers will be accompanied by thunderstorms.

These include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Nandi.

Other areas expected to experience similar weather conditions include Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

While most counties in the Lake region and the Rift Valley will receive above-average rainfall, the central region is expected to get moderate showers during the same period. These counties include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi, where rainfall will mainly fall in the afternoon.

In contrast, dry weather is expected in the south-eastern lowlands, with counties such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta not expected to receive any rainfall in the five days.

Coastal counties, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, along with the coastal part of Tana River County, are also expected to remain warm and dry throughout the forecast period.

The department has also indicated that cold and cloudy conditions are likely to occur in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley itself, and the south-eastern lowlands.

In particular, cold weather is predicted in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi counties. According to Kenya Met, temperatures in these areas will drop to lows of 7°C, then rise slightly to 10°C before dipping again to 9°C.

Kenya Met further forecasted strong winds blowing from the south and south-east, especially in the coastal region, south-eastern lowlands, as well as in parts of north-eastern and northwestern Kenya. Wind speeds are expected to exceed 25 knots, equivalent to 12.86 metres per second.
