Businessman charged over Sh93.5 million Karen land scam involving two MPs

According to the prosecution, Abdi convinced the complainants that he had the authority and capacity to sell them various parcels of land, prompting them to part with millions of shillings.

A Nairobi businessman has been arraigned in court over allegations of defrauding two Members of Parliament and two other investors of Sh93.5 million through a purported land sale scheme involving parcels in the upscale Karen area.
Abdiwahab Sheikh Abdi appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai, where he denied four counts of obtaining money by false pretences linked to several parcels of land allegedly offered for sale in Nairobi’s Karen suburb.
According to the prosecution, Abdi convinced the complainants that he had the authority and capacity to sell them various parcels of land, prompting them to part with millions of shillings.
The court heard that Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe allegedly lost Sh26 million after being promised ownership of land identified as LR No. 13873/3. Prosecutors say the representation was false.
In a separate count, Ikolomani MP Bernard Masaka Shinali is said to have paid Sh25 million for LR No. 13873/9, which the prosecution alleges the accused had no legal authority to sell.

The charges further state that businessman Ben Kiptoo Ego paid Sh26.5 million for LR No. 13873/2, while entrepreneur Abdikadir Ali Ibrahim allegedly lost Sh16 million in a transaction involving LR No. 13873/11.
The prosecution maintains that all the transactions were based on false claims that the accused was in a position to transfer ownership of the properties.
Through his lawyer, Abdi applied for release on bond, arguing that he would comply with all court conditions and was entitled to bail under Article 49 of the Constitution. The prosecution did not oppose the application.
Magistrate Mutai released him on a bond of Sh2million or an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000. He was also ordered to provide one contact person.
The case will be mentioned in two weeks for further directions.
