Ruto dismisses Azimio leadership shake-up, says coalition changes won’t threaten his 2027 bid

President William Ruto has dismissed Azimio’s leadership shake-up and its impact on the 2027 polls, as ODM formally rejects changes made by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

President William Ruto has said he is unconcerned about the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition and its potential impact on his 2027 re-election bid, even as the opposition group recently announced changes in its leadership.
Speaking after officially inaugurating the Africa Inland Church (AIC) Pipeline in Embakasi, Nairobi County, on Sunday, Ruto said his campaign is prepared to face any challenges ahead of the 2027 elections.
“I am asking the people I am competing with to prepare well. We understand this politics so well,” Ruto said.
He also questioned the effectiveness of Azimio’s reorganisation, suggesting the coalition is unlikely to gain traction without support from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), a key member of the alliance.
“Now I hear they are reviving Azimio. We will beat Azimio so early in the morning in 2027. Let me ask you, isn’t Azimio without ODM dead on arrival? Isn't that true?” Ruto said, referring to reports that ODM had rejected the coalition’s recent leadership changes.

The President’s comments follow Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka being named Azimio’s new coalition leader, while Suba South MP Caroli Omondi was appointed Secretary-General, replacing Suna East MP Junet Mohammed. Philip Kisia also succeeded Raphael Tuju as Executive Director.
However, ODM later rejected the leadership changes, saying they violated the coalition’s governing rules and that the party’s leader, Oburu Oginga, had not been consulted as required.
In a letter to the Registrar of Political Parties, John Cox Lorianokou, ODM stated that the changes, effected by Azimio Council Chairman and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, lacked legitimacy and should be suspended immediately.
“It is our considered position that the ODM Party Leader, an expressly named and key constituent party under the Deed of Agreement, was neither informed nor involved in the purported changes,” the party said.
“Consequently, the meeting and its resolutions were ultra vires, in contravention of the express provisions of the Deed of Agreement, and are therefore null and void.”
ODM further argued that the authority to make leadership changes within Azimio lies collectively with the leaders of the coalition’s constituent parties—ODM, Jubilee, and the Wiper Patriotic Front—and not with a single individual.
