Sudan army makes major gains in South Kordofan, retakes key villages from SPLM-N

The Sudan conflict has killed more than 40,000 people, displaced over 14 million, and driven parts of the country into famine, creating one of the world's largest humanitarian crises.

Sudan's army has announced a major advance in South Kordofan after recapturing several villages long held by SPLM-N fighters.

The SPLM-N, which split into rival factions in 2017, continues to fight for greater autonomy in South Kordofan and Blue Nile. Its operations now overlap with the broader conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Videos reviewed by local media on Sunday showed government troops entering multiple areas around Al-Abbasiya and neighbouring districts, marking one of the army's most significant gains against the SPLM-N.

Military sources and pro-army activists reported that soldiers advanced into at least seven villages, with verified footage confirming their presence in Al-Damra and movement towards Tabassa and Gurdud Nama.

Additional reports from The Sudan Tribune indicate that the operation also secured Tabassa, Al-Damira, Al-Shawaya, Al-Jubailat, Al-Sanadra, Gurdud, and Jama localities.

Analysts suggest that the offensive could put pressure on SPLM-N positions around Al-Mureib, where fighters loyal to Abdel Aziz al-Hilu have maintained a longstanding presence.

If the army captures key areas in Hibeila, it could push from El-Obeid in North Kordofan towards Kadugli via Al-Delling. Controlling this strategic route would help lift the months-long siege on Al-Delling imposed by SPLM-N and RSF forces.

The operation comes amid intensifying fighting in the Nuba Mountains. Aid agencies have reported heavy clashes in Kartala involving the army, SPLM-N, and RSF-aligned forces.

According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), more than 1,600 people have fled to parts of Dalami locality in recent days, with the security situation remaining volatile.

Meanwhile, in West Kordofan, the RSF intensified attacks on army positions in Babanusa on Sunday, using drones and heavy artillery to target key bases, local media reported. The town has been under an RSF siege since early 2024, with renewed assaults over the past two weeks.

The conflict has killed more than 40,000 people, displaced over 14 million, and driven parts of the country into famine, creating one of the world's largest humanitarian crises.
