University of Nairobi cautions new students against fake admission letters

UoN labelled the letter as fake and advised students to strictly follow instructions issued through the university’s verified Facebook page, official X (Twitter) account, or SMS.
The University of Nairobi has issued a warning to newly admitted students, urging them to avoid relying on unverified online platforms for their admission information following the spread of a fake letter shared on social media.
In a statement released on Monday, July 21, the university dismissed a message circulated through an unverified account, which falsely claimed that both government-sponsored and self-sponsored students could retrieve their admission letters through the student portal using their KCSE index numbers.

UoN labelled the letter as fake and advised students to strictly follow instructions issued through the university’s verified Facebook page, official X (Twitter) account, or SMS.
The university stressed that this is the only way to ensure students receive accurate and official information.
According to the university, those under the government-sponsored category (Module 1) are required to visit the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) website to access their admission details.
For students under the self-sponsored category (Module 2), UoN directed them to get in touch through the official university email or phone number if they have not received an SMS from the university.
It also asked students to remain alert and ensure they do not miss any admission updates, which will be sent via SMS.
"Congratulations once again on your admission to the University of Nairobi! To ensure a smooth onboarding process, please follow the instructions below carefully, depending on your admission category," the statement read.
"Pro Tip: To avoid missing important updates, ensure push notifications on your mobile phone are enabled. The University will continue to send important updates via SMS until the admission process is complete," the statement added.
The warning comes just a few days after KUCCPS opened its inter-institutional transfer portal, allowing students to change either the courses or the institutions they had initially selected.
In a notice issued on Saturday, July 12, KUCCPS informed applicants that they could submit transfer requests from Monday, July 14, to Thursday, July 24.
However, the agency noted that only students who meet the required cut-off points for their preferred institutions and courses would be allowed to make the changes.
