Members of the Muslim community in the state of Minnesota are calling for increased security and vigilance after police arrested a man carrying knives outside a mosque in the city of Lakeville, raising concerns among worshippers and civil rights groups about safety at places of worship in the United States.
The incident came only days after another attack targeting a mosque in the United States, where authorities in California said several people were shot during an incident near a Muslim place of worship, increasing fears among Muslim communities about security and possible threats against religious institutions.
Police in Lakeville said the suspect was seen acting in a manner that alarmed members of the Lakeville Masjid before officers arrived at the scene and detained him outside the mosque. Authorities later said the man was carrying a pocketknife and a box cutter when he was arrested near the building.
According to investigators, the suspect also claimed that he was involved in a federal investigation related to child trafficking and presented himself as a federal agent. Police said the man could not provide any identification or documents to support those claims. Officers also reported finding substances believed to be narcotics during the arrest.
The case has drawn attention from Muslim organisations across Minnesota, including the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, known as CAIR-MN, which welcomed the arrest and thanked law enforcement officers for responding before the situation escalated further.
In a statement released after the incident, the organisation urged Muslim communities and other religious institutions to remain alert and continue working closely with police and local authorities to improve safety measures around mosques and community centres.
“We are thankful that law enforcement acted quickly before anyone was harmed,” said Jaylani Hussein, executive director of CAIR-MN. “Mosques and other places of worship should be safe spaces for families and communities.”
Hussein said the arrest has added to growing concerns among Muslims in the state who are already worried about threats and disturbances targeting mosques in different parts of the country.
He said members of the community have become increasingly cautious in recent years because of incidents involving vandalism, threats and harassment directed at places of worship. Hussein also said mosque leaders are now reviewing security procedures and encouraging worshippers to report suspicious activity immediately.
Police in Lakeville said no injuries were reported during the incident and confirmed that officers responded quickly after concerns were raised by members of the mosque. Authorities added that investigators are still examining the suspect’s actions and background to determine whether the mosque was specifically targeted because of religion.
At this stage, police said there is no evidence proving that the suspect intended to carry out an attack or that the incident was motivated by anti-Muslim hatred. However, investigators noted that the case remains active and that further information could emerge as the investigation continues.
The incident comes at a time when religious groups across the United States are facing concerns over security at houses of worship.
Muslim organisations have repeatedly called for stronger protection measures following incidents involving threats, vandalism and violence at mosques and Islamic centres.
Community leaders in Minnesota said they are continuing discussions with local authorities and federal agencies about security coordination during prayer gatherings and religious events. Some mosques in the state have already increased surveillance measures and expanded communication with local police departments following previous incidents.
Residents in Lakeville also expressed concern after news of the arrest spread across social media and local community networks. Some worshippers said they were worried because families and children regularly attend prayers and educational activities at the mosque.
The Lakeville Masjid has continued its activities following the incident, with community leaders assuring worshippers that they are cooperating with investigators and taking steps to maintain safety at the mosque.
Police have not yet released the identity of the suspect or announced possible charges connected to the case. The investigation remains ongoing.
