Dry weather to dominate Kenya as selected counties brace for rainfall

The forecast shows that afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely in Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisii, Nakuru, Busia, Siaya, Kisumu.

Most parts of Kenya are expected to remain dry between July 14 and July 20, although rainfall is forecast in 16 counties, mainly in western Kenya and the Rift Valley.

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), some counties, including Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisii, Nakuru, Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Narok, Bomet, Nyamira, Vihiga, Uasin Gishu and Nandi, may receive rainfall during the period.

The weather agency said intermittent cool and cloudy conditions, accompanied by light rains in a few places, are expected in parts of Nairobi, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nyandarua, Nyeri and Tharaka-Nithi counties.

Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Tharaka-Nithi and Embu counties may also receive afternoon showers during the forecast period.

KMD said morning rains are expected in Nairobi, Kisumu, Siaya, Busia, Bungoma and Kakamega counties, while parts of Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nyandarua, Nyeri and Tharaka-Nithi are likely to experience morning cloudiness with light rains in a few areas.

Sunny intervals are expected in the mornings in several counties, including Baringo, Bomet, Elgeyo/Marakwet, Garissa, Homa Bay, Isiolo, Kajiado, Kericho, Kilifi, Kisii, Kitui, Kwale, Lamu, Machakos, Makueni, Mandera, Marsabit, Migori, Mombasa, Nakuru, Nandi, Narok, Nyamira, Samburu, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Trans Nzoia, Turkana, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga, Wajir and West Pokot.

The agency also said sunny intervals are expected in the afternoons in areas such as Baringo, Elgeyo/Marakwet, Garissa, Isiolo, Kajiado, Kiambu, Kilifi, Kitui, Kwale, Laikipia, Lamu, Machakos, Makueni, Mandera, Marsabit, Meru, Migori, Mombasa, Nairobi, Samburu, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Turkana, Wajir and West Pokot.

Night showers may occur in Busia, Bungoma and Kakamega counties, while partly cloudy nights are expected in most parts of the country.

The weather forecast also indicates that daytime temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius are expected in parts of Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit, Samburu, West Pokot and Turkana counties.

At the same time, night-time temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius are expected in parts of Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nakuru, Baringo, Narok, Kajiado, Kiambu and Taita Taveta counties.

The Kenya Meteorological Service forecast shows Lodwar is expected to record temperatures ranging between 15 and 36 degrees Celsius, Garissa between 22 and 34 degrees Celsius, Wajir between 24 and 34 degrees Celsius, while Kisumu will record between 16 and 31 degrees Celsius.

In Nairobi, temperatures are expected to range between 11 and 27 degrees Celsius, while Nyahururu is expected to record between 4 and 24 degrees Celsius.

Other towns expected to experience varying temperatures include Thika between 12 and 29 degrees Celsius, Nakuru between 11 and 28 degrees Celsius, Eldoret between 11 and 25 degrees Celsius, Kericho between 15 and 26 degrees Celsius, Kisii between 15 and 31 degrees Celsius, Kakamega between 10 and 31 degrees Celsius, Nyeri between 13 and 25 degrees Celsius, Embu between 13 and 26 degrees Celsius and Meru between 12 and 25 degrees Celsius.

Reviewing weather conditions between July 6 and July 12, 2026, the weatherman said most parts of the country remained dry, although rainfall was recorded in a few counties, mainly Nyandarua, Siaya, Narok, Kisii and Nairobi.

“The highest seven-day rainfall total of 81.9 millimetres was recorded at the automatic weather station at Magomano Secondary School in Nyandarua County,” KMD said.

The highest rainfall recorded within 24 hours during the review period was 68.0 millimetres at Konya Secondary School automatic weather station in Siaya County on July 10, 2026.

The weather agency noted that rainfall amounts increased in several counties, including Narok, Siaya and Kilifi, when compared with the June 29 to July 5, 2026 review period. However, rainfall has reduced in areas including Kakamega, Nyamira and Bungoma.

During the same period, daytime temperatures increased in several stations, including Nyeri, Suba and Mandera, while temperatures reduced in Laikipia, Nakuru and Eldoret.

Night-time temperatures dropped in most stations, although Kangema, Thika and Marsabit recorded increases.

Mandera Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 37.4 degrees Celsius on July 6, 2026, while Nyahururu Meteorological Station recorded the lowest daily minimum temperature of 4.2 degrees Celsius on July 7, 2026.

The two stations also recorded the highest seven-day average maximum temperature and the lowest seven-day average minimum temperature at 35.5 degrees Celsius and 7.5 degrees Celsius, respectively.
