Two days ago parts of the road were washed away in the Tula area in the Bangale sub-county causing a major transport hitch for motorists from Nairobi, Garissa, Wajir and Tana River counties.

The Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross Ahmed Idris said thousands of families have been displaced and that an entire region has been cut off from the main supply lines.

"The Kenya Red Cross and response agencies are doing their best to reach affected populations. We must urgently scale up our humanitarian response," Ahmed tweeted.

Garissa Township MP Dekow M Barrow said the situation in Garissa has drastically moved from bad to worse.

"Almost half of Garissa town is now trapped by the floods and the main Mororo-Garissa bridge is at risk of collapsing! Kenya Red Cross has done quite a great work but this disaster requires more concerted action by the national government," Dekow tweeted on Sunday.

Nominated Member of Parliament Umulkher Harun Mohamed said the Madogo road connecting to Garissa was cut off.

"Garissa is now an Island! Mandera is inaccessible. Very much grateful to the Kenya Red Cross for its prompt response during these difficult times. I know it’s not easy working round the clock but your on-ground response is extremely appreciated," Umulkher said.
