Kenya Railways increases SGR passenger fares

By |

Kenya Railways said the increase has been necessitated by changes in the energy and petroleum sector where prices of fuel have significantly increased affecting the cost of its operations.

Kenya Railways has increased the fare of its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train services across its routes around the country.

The affected services include the Madaraka Express Passenger Service, the Madaraka Express Commuter Service, the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service, the Kisumu Safari Train and the Nanyuki Safari Train.

Kenya Railways said the increase has been necessitated by changes in the energy and petroleum sector where prices of fuel have significantly increased affecting the cost of its operations.

The new fares take effect from January 1, 2024.

A passenger travelling first class from Nairobi to Mombasa will now pay Sh4,500 up from Sh3,000.

A passenger travelling the same route will now pay Sh1,500 up from Sh1,000.

"Customers making advance purchases for the Madaraka Express Passenger Service will notice the adjusted fares as of November 1, 2023, to take into account the advance ticket purchasing window of 60 days," Kenya Railways management said in a statement dated Tuesday.

Below is a breakdown of the adjusted fares.
