The area chief filed a report at the Kalani Police Post, under OB number 3/12/2/2024.
“[The woman] was found [dead] in the sitting room of [their] house with multiple deep injuries in the upper part of the body,” a police report stated, adding the murder weapon was yet to be found.
The man also chopped off several of the woman's fingers and injured their one-year-old child, who was taken to the Coast General Referral Hospital. The body was taken to the facility's morgue.
Among recent victims of femicide in Kenya are Starlet Wahu and Rita Waeni, a university student who was dismembered after a kidnapping.
While official data on femicide remains scarce, independent organisations like Femicide Count Kenya paint a grim picture. They recorded 58 femicide deaths between January and October 2022, with that number skyrocketing to 152 in 2023 – the highest in five years.
Investigative platforms estimate that this brutal trend claimed the lives of roughly 500 Kenyan women between 2017 and 2024.
Between 2021 and 2024, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) documented 94 killings of girls and women, which led to the arraignment of 65 suspects.
To curb the cases, the DCI has assembled a crack team of profilers and forensic experts to expedite investigations and bring perpetrators to justice. The team's immediate mandate is to fast-track pending investigations.
