Lookman, Banda and Williams among top winners at the 2024 CAF Awards

Ademola Lookman, Barbra Banda, and Ronwen Williams were the standout winners at the 2024 CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco. The ceremony celebrated Africa’s top football talent, with record-breaking performances and historic achievements taking centre stage.
Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, Zambia’s Barbra Banda, and South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams emerged as the biggest winners at the 2024 CAF Awards, held in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday. The annual ceremony celebrates the finest football talent across Africa.
Lookman was named CAF Men’s Player of the Year after a remarkable season with Atalanta in Italy and the Super Eagles. He follows compatriot Victor Osimhen, who won the award in 2023, making this the first back-to-back Nigerian winners since the 1990s.

Barbra Banda, who plays for Orlando Pride in the United States, won the Women’s Player of the Year award. Banda had a record-breaking year, scoring the decisive goal to help her team clinch the NWSL Championship and setting an Olympic football record with her third career hat-trick. She also became the first African player to feature in the FIFPRO Women’s World 11.

South Africa’s Ronwen Williams took home two awards: Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year and Men’s Interclub Player of the Year. Known for his heroic penalty saves during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Williams also led Mamelodi Sundowns to a record-equalling defensive season in the South African Premiership.
Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie was named Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year for her stellar performances with Paris FC in France. Morocco’s Sanaâ Mssoudy won Women’s Interclub Player of the Year after excelling in the CAF Women’s Champions League while the Men’s Coach of the Year award went to Emerse Fae, who led Cote d’Ivoire to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.
The awards also recognised the best national teams, with Cote d’Ivoire winning Men’s National Team of the Year and Nigeria’s Super Falcons named Women’s National Team of the Year.
In the club categories, Egypt’s Al Ahly was named Men’s Club of the Year, while TP Mazembe from DR Congo won the Women’s Club of the Year title.
The event also highlighted individual brilliance, with Angola’s Mabululu winning Goal of the Year for his stunning strike at the Africa Cup of Nations. Referees and assistants were also honoured, emphasising the vital roles they play in the sport.
