History made as South Sudan Premier League kicks off

South Sudan made history on December 23, 2024, with the launch of its inaugural Premier League, a milestone for the nation since gaining independence. Sponsored by MTN South Sudan, the 14-team league kicked off at Juba Stadium, where Al Malakia Juba FC triumphed 2-0 against El Merriekh SC Bentiu in an action-packed opener.

The inaugural of the South Sudan Premier League held on December 23rd 2024, has marked a landmark kind of history as the first time South Sudan have held a league since independence.

Speaking to Cecafa-online the president of South Sudan Footbal Association (SSFA), Augustino Maduot Parek, expressed their joy in starting the league. “This is a crucial step in the development of Football in South Sudan,” he added.

The inaugural of the fourteen teams league sponsored by MTN South Sudan will conclude June 2025. To kick off the league started with a thrilling action powered by Al Malaika Juba FC`s win against El Merriekh SC Bentiu.

Al Malakia Juba FC defeated El Merriekh SC Bentiu 2-0 in the opening match played at the Juba Stadium on Monday. Second half goals by Emmanuel Jowang and Mabior Herjok were enough to ensure Al Malakia Juba FC collected maximum points to kick-start the season on a winning note.

Action continues on Tuesday with Kator FC Juba hosting Wajuma FC, while Juba Local Football Association representatives and two times South Sudan Cup champions, Jamus FC battle Bentiu City FC on Wednesday.

Elsewhere South Sudan picked a crucial win (3-2) against Rwanda to qualify for African Nations Championship (CHAN) , a match played in Juba National Stadium, Juba.

After 12 minutes an own goal by Aimable Nsabimana gave the home side the lead. Mandela Malish increased South Sudan’s lead after 20 minutes. Rwanda returned determined after the interval and pulled a goal back through Kevin Muhire after only four minutes.

But the home team continued to attack in numbers and Ebon Malish netted their third goal after 53 minutes. The visitors however did not give up and scored a second goal through Didier Mugisha after 66 minutes.

Already hosts of the CHAN 2025 Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania have automatically qualified ahead of the 19-team’s tournament exclusively featuring players from domestic leagues across Africa. The tournament will take place in East Africa from February 1-28, 2025.
