Ethiopia appoints new foreign affairs minister in cabinet reshuffle

Ethiopia has appointed Gedion Timothewos as its new Minister of Foreign Affairs. Timothewos replaces Ambassador Taye Atske-Selassie, who recently became the country's president.

Additionally, Gedion served as the country's Attorney General starting in November 2021. In this role, he oversaw Ethiopia's legal system, managed prosecutions, and promoted legal reforms central to the country's governance.

Gedion's appointment reflects the government's confidence in his abilities and his potential to bring a legal perspective to foreign policy matters.

Ethiopia's international relations have grown more complex in recent years, particularly with neighbouring countries and global partners. Managing these relations will require legal expertise, especially with the growing importance of treaties and international agreements.

In addition to Gedion's appointment, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has made several other key changes to his cabinet. Salamawit Kassa, who previously served as State Minister for the Federal Communication Service, has been named the new Minister of Tourism.

In her former role, she oversaw national communications and media, including Ethiopia's digital transformation.

As Minister of Tourism, her focus will now shift to promoting Ethiopia's cultural heritage and natural attractions, which are becoming increasingly important as the country seeks to boost its tourism industry post-pandemic.

Another key appointment is that of Hanna Arayaselassie, who is the new Minister of Justice. Before this role, Hanna was the Commissioner of the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC), where she played a major role in attracting foreign direct investment.

Her experience in investment and economic development may shape her approach to justice as Ethiopia continues to pursue legal reforms that affect its economic and governance systems.
