A joint statement emphasised the shared dedication to a peaceful and prosperous East Africa. Acknowledging the importance of collective action, the two leaders highlighted the ongoing collaboration as a testament to the unity and growth potential within Africa.
Somalia is currently in discussions to join the East African Community (EAC), a regional group aimed at fostering economic cooperation among neighboring countries. President Mohamud's visit to Burundi signifies a significant step in linking Somalia with other regions for economic growth.
Mohamud Sheikh Farah, the minister overseeing planning and development, credited President Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre for Somalia's progress in this direction. Farah stated, "Somalia joining the EAC will foster regional integration and provide numerous trade opportunities benefiting the entire region."
One of the key advantages Somalia anticipates from EAC membership is leveraging its extensive coastline, the longest in Africa at over 3,333 kilometers, connecting the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. By tapping into this resource, Somalia aims to boost trade opportunities, enhance regional integration, and contribute to the economic prosperity of the entire region.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been a vocal advocate for Somalia's inclusion in the EAC since securing his second term in 2022. The focus is on generating wealth and prosperity for the Somali people through increased trade and expanded market access facilitated by EAC membership. This aligns with the EAC's broader strategy of expanding its membership to boost trade within the bloc and with other regional entities.
