Six suspects grilled as crackdown on hate speech in Lamu intensifies

In the ongoing efforts to quell inter-ethnic and religious tensions in Lamu County, authorities have summoned two additional suspects for questioning, bringing the total number of individuals called in by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to six.

The recent arrests closely follow a visit to Lamu by Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki.

Scheduled to appear before DCI detectives, the two summoned suspects are Stephen Kariuki Nyaga, also known as Governor wa Hindi and Stephen Kariuki.

They are expected to provide statements in connection with the ongoing investigation.

Expressing a stern warning, Interior Ministry CS Kithure Kindiki emphasised that those instigating ethnic or religious discord in the county would face severe legal consequences, regardless of their political, religious, or social status. He reiterated this message during his visit to Lamu.

Simultaneously, four other suspects, Abubakar Ahmed, Omar Sharif, Mohamed Mbwana, and Feiswal Mohamed Miji have been summoned to appear at the Lamu DCI office on December 14, 2023, at 9:00 a.m.

This action follows the Interior CS's directive for immediate investigations into individuals fostering tribal and religious divisions in the region.

Terror threats

Kindiki underscored the government's unwavering commitment to addressing the security situation in Lamu County, aiming to thwart the threats posed by terrorists, extremist ideologies, and other criminal elements.

He reaffirmed the government's dedication to engaging with local communities, aiming to fortify their trust in security agencies.

Lamu County has been the focal point of multiple assaults by militants based in Somalia in recent months.

Disturbing statistics indicate that between June and September of the current year, these attackers claimed the lives of at least 40 individuals, including civilians and security personnel. They also caused extensive damage by setting fire to over 20 homes and a church.

The targeted areas lie in proximity to the border between Kenya and Somalia, allowing terrorists to launch attacks swiftly before fleeing back across the border.

The repeated incidents have resulted in numerous fatalities and displacements in the area.

Residents are urged to promptly report any suspicious activities to authorities to prevent further tragedies.
