DPP Renson Ingonga also wants the probe to assess whether or not, the tragedy may have resulted from negligence or recklessness and forward the file for review towards making the decision to charge.

The Directorate of Public Prosecutions has directed the Inspector General of Police to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly fire that claimed the lives of 17 pupils at Hillside Academy in Endarasha for action.

In a statement released on Saturday, DPP Renson Ingonga also wants the probe to assess whether or not, the tragedy may have resulted from negligence or recklessness and forward the file for review towards making the decision to charge.

"The DPP assures the public that any person found capable towards the fire tragedy shall be expediently taken through due process of Criminal trial," the statement said.

Mr Ingonga further condoled with affected families of the tragedy that also left 14 other pupils nursing burn wounds and more unaccounted for.

"Unfortunately, this tragedy evokes bad memories of other similar school fire incidents which many times point to negligence and failure by responsibility holders to not only prioritise the safety of our young children at school, but to also ensure that there is compliance with the safety protocols under the relevant statutes including the Basic Education Act, the Children's Act, and the safety standards manual for schools, which set out safety and prote iron measures that all educational institutions must adhere to," he added.

Following the tragedy, President William Ruto has announced a three-day of National mourning in honour of the victims.
