Five days of heavy rainfall and low night temperatures expected across Kenya

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a rainfall advisory, urging residents across several regions to prepare for moderate to heavy rains from October 25, 2024 to October 29, 2024.

In its five-day weather forecast released on Friday, the department highlighted the need for caution, especially in the Highlands East region, the West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley.

Areas likely to experience significant rainfall include the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo-Marakwet.

The meteorological report indicates that the downpour is expected to begin in the afternoon and may continue into the night in some locations, with thunderstorms accompanying the rains.

In addition to these regions, the counties of Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot are also expected to experience heavy rainfall over the next five days.

Residents in the Highlands East counties including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi should also prepare for occasional rainfall, particularly in the afternoons.

The advisory extends to coastal areas as well. Residents in the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as coastal parts of Tana River County, should expect light rains starting from mid-morning.

Temperature Advisory

In addition to the rainfall warning, the meteorological department has cautioned that temperatures are expected to drop significantly at night in several counties.

Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi are likely to experience night temperatures as low as 6°C during the first three days of the forecast.

For the remainder of the period, temperatures are expected to rise slightly to around 7°C.

During the day, however, residents in counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot should brace for high daytime temperatures reaching up to 32°C.

Other regions warned of hot conditions include Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged all residents in the affected areas to take precautions to protect themselves from the weather conditions, particularly during the expected heavy rainfall and fluctuating temperatures.
