The committee was probing claims that Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers has been registering teachers with disabilities without their consent.

The Union wants the Disability Bill 2023 and other draft laws which include but are not limited to the Learners with Disabilities Bill and the Sign Language Bill expedited.

According to the 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census, 918,270 people aged five years and above had a disability, accounting for 2.2 per cent of the total population.

Senator Asige says the 2019 count undervalued the number of disabled persons in the country.
