Victims of Range Rover-lorry collision in Mariakani, Kilifi identified

Police said the driver of the Range Rover, a 37-year-old man died alongside a female passenger aged 29 years when the accident happened at Maji Ya Chumvi area at about 7 am.

Police have revealed the details of the early Tuesday morning accident involving a new Range Rover and an Isuzu canter along the Mombasa highway in the Mariakani area, in Kilifi County.

The accident claimed at least two lives when the new sports utility vehicle collided head-on with the canter.

Three others were injured in the accident that left both the Range Rover and the FRR Isuzu canter extensively damaged.

Police said the driver of the Range Rover, a 37-year-old man died alongside a female passenger aged 29 years when the accident happened at Maji Ya Chumvi area at about 7 am.

Their bodies were moved to Coast General Hospital Morgue as the injured were rushed to Mariakani Sub County Hospital.

"The driver was speeding from Mombasa to Nairobi direction when he collided with the canter, as he tried to overtake another vehicle. Both wrecks were towed to the local police station," the police said.

The driver and his passenger died on the spot while three others who were in the canter were seriously injured and rushed to Mariakani Sub County Hospital.

Eyewitnesses blamed the incident on the Range Rover driver who they accused of speeding and overtaking.

Police said they are investigating the accident.

The accident happened amid calls by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to road users to exercise vigilance and make proper decisions to ensure the safety of all road users.

The authority has intensified compliance checks and the conduct of motorists across the country especially in the wake of schools reopening for the critical third term.

"In the event of a crash, those using seatbelts are likely to stay in their seating compartments while those without might be ejected thus increasing the risk of fatal and serious injuries," the authority said on Monday.
