Registrar of Marriages orders submission of all certificates in 30 days effective September 3, 2024

All marriage certificates for weddings that have already taken place must be sent to the Registrar of Marriages office in Nairobi within 30 days from September 3, 2024.

The Registrar of Marriages has issued a notice requiring all gazetted Registrars of Marriage and Licensed Ministers of Faith to submit marriage certificates for past and future weddings.

According to the notice, all marriage certificates for weddings that have already taken place must be sent to the Registrar of Marriages office in Nairobi within 30 days from September 3, 2024.

The Office of the Attorney-General and Department of Justice said the directive is in compliance with Sections 53,54,55,56 and 57 of the Marriage Act, Cap 150.

"Submit to the Registrar of Marriages office, Nairobi all marriage certificates for the marriages already conducted and in their custody within 30 days," read the notice.

Additionally, starting September 1, 2024, the Registrar said all marriage certificates must be scanned and emailed to [email protected].

The original certificates must be delivered to the Registrar's office within 14 days after the wedding.

"Scan and upload marriage certificates and Registrar's certificates or special licenses as the case maybe for all marriages to be conducted from September 1, 2024. The same is to be submitted to [email protected], and deliver the original marriage certificates to the Registrar of Marriages, Nairobi within 14 days of the celebration of the marriage," reads the notice.

The Registrar emphasised that following the guidelines is important for staying within the law.
