The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has condemned the mortar attack on Halane Camp in Mogadishu.

The attack on the camp that hosts US, UN, AU, and other foreign diplomatic missions, left three people dead and others injured.

“The heinous attack will not deter us or the Somali Security Forces from pursuing lasting peace and security in Somalia. We affirm our unwavering commitment to combat terrorism and build a peaceful and prosperous Somalia,” stated Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and head of ATMIS.

ATMIS extended its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the attack and wished a swift recovery for those injured.

Ambassador Souef reiterated that ATMIS would remain steadfast in its mission, undeterred by violent efforts to disrupt Somalia's path toward peace and stability.

The Halane Camp, a heavily fortified base housing foreign diplomats, UN staff, and African Union peacekeepers, has been a target of Al-Shabaab militants, who aim to undermine Somalia’s security efforts.

The Sunday assault follows another tragic incident last month when militants launched an attack on the camp, leaving staff injured. The mission noted some of its staff were slightly injured and treated.

It further said that necessary precautionary measures had been taken to ensure the safety and security of the staff at the camp.

"The attack by Al-Shabaab will not diminish AMISOM's resolve to carry out its important mandate to drive out the terrorists and bring lasting peace and security in Somalia," ATMIS said in a statement on October 13 after the attack.
