Sports sector gets major financial boost with over 150% budget increase

The proposed budget allocation of Ksh16.5 billion mainly aims to support international events and improve sports infrastructure

The sports sector has received a significant boost, with the National Treasury recommending a more than 150% increase in the 2024–2025 budgetary allocation. National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u proposed an allocation of Ksh16.5 billion to the Sports Fund, a substantial rise from the Ksh6.4 billion allocated in the 2023–2024 national budget.

This increased funding marks a reversal from previous years' allocations, where the fund received Ksh15.8 billion in the 2022/2023 financial year and Ksh15 billion in the 2021/2022 financial year. The enhanced budget is seen as a crucial step in supporting Kenya's preparations for major upcoming international events, including the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania, and the Paris Olympic Games scheduled for next month, July 2024.

The government is investing in the construction of the new Talanta Hela Stadium, expected to be completed by December 2025. Additionally, the government is closing Nyayo Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, both designated to host matches for the Africa Cup of Nations, for renovations to meet international standards.

“We are also cognizant of the brand value of Kenyans participating and excelling in the international sports arena,” stated Prof. Njuguna. I propose an allocation of Ksh16.5 billion to the Sports, Arts, and Social Development Fund.” Prof. Njuguna Ndung'u said while reading the budget.

The increased allocation will also support preparations for the 2025 WRC Safari Rally and the World Athletics Championships slated for Tokyo, among other events planned for the next financial year.

In a bid to discourage gambling, Prof. Njuguna announced a 20% excise duty on advertisement fees for gambling activities across television, print media, billboards, and radio stations. This move aims to curb the growing gambling culture in the country while promoting healthier, more productive pastimes.
