FC Shabah clinched victory in the Wajir Governor's Super Cup 2024 after defeating Al-Anssar FC in a tense penalty shootout. The tournament highlighted the importance of sports in combating radicalization and empowering youth, with officials reaffirming their commitment to supporting local talent and fostering a positive environment for sports engagement.
The 2024 edition of the Wajir Governor's Super Cup concluded triumphantly with FC Shabah emerging victorious, securing a thrilling win over Al-Anssar FC in a nail-biting penalty shootout, at the Wajir Stadium on Sunday.
The intense match ended in a goalless draw during regular time with Shabar winning 5-4 on post-match penalties.
For their exceptional performance, FC Shabah claimed a well-deserved cash prize of Ksh500,000. Meanwhile, the runners-up, third-place, and fourth-place teams received Ksh250,000, Ksh200,000, and Ksh100,000 respectively.
Mr. Adenweli Hashi, Wajir County Chief Officer, emphasized that the success of the tournament extended far beyond the field, highlighting its role in fostering resilience against radicalization within the community.
"It's a testament to our community's resilience against radicalization, and the positive impact sports can have on shaping a united and empowered youth," he stated, reaffirming the commitment to utilizing football as a catalyst for societal cohesion and empowerment.
Abdinassir Mohamed, midfielder for Shabah FC, echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging football's potential to drive positive societal change. "Efforts to address radicalization through community engagement have been amplified, creating a stronger foundation for a harmonious society," Mohamed expressed, emphasizing the pivotal role of sports in combatting extremist ideologies.
Abdirizak Diif, a player from Al-Ansar FC, commended the tournament's contribution to youth empowerment, emphasizing the cultivation of unity and resilience among participants, thereby fortifying them against radical influences.
Governor Ahmed Abdullahi underscored the indispensable role of sports in providing a constructive outlet for the youth. "Our commitment to supporting youth through sports remains steadfast, serving as a shield against radicalization and substance abuse," he affirmed, reiterating the government's dedication to nurturing and endorsing local talent.
