Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy opted for a modern approach in addressing fans’ concerns after unveiling his 23-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against The Gambia and Seychelles.

Instead of waiting for a press conference, the South African tactician took to Instagram to respond directly to supporters who flooded the comment section with questions regarding key omissions.

One fan asked about Mohammed Bajaber, to which Benni replied: “Still recovering from injury.” Another questioned the absence of left-back Eric “Marcelo” Ouma, and McCarthy was quick to clarify: “Injured Achilles tendon operation.”

Ouma himself confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement to fans:

"Dear fans, unfortunately, yesterday during our training, I got injured and the tests revealed that I ruptured my Achilles tendon. I would have wished to play for my club and Kenya during the upcoming games, but unfortunately, it is beyond my control. I will do everything to come back stronger than ever… God bless you all."

However, the coach chose not to address queries surrounding Austine Odhiambo, who was the joint top scorer during CHAN 2024 but missed out on the call-up. Multiple fans pressed for answers, yet Benni remained silent on the matter, leaving speculation to linger.

The final squad blends experienced campaigners with new inclusions coming in. With Kenya sitting fourth in Group F on six points, trailing leaders Ivory Coast (16), Gabon (15), and Burundi (10), the Harambee Stars will look to close the gap when they host Gambia on September 5 before facing Seychelles on September 9 at Kasarani Stadium.
