Kwale initiates Sh20 million project for tourism infrastructure upgrade

The Kwale County government has unveiled plans to invest Sh20 million in infrastructure projects aimed at bolstering the local tourism sector.

Governor Fatuma Achani emphasised the pivotal role of beaches in coastal tourism, citing their allure to domestic and international visitors.

Governor Fatuma highlighted that improving the beachfront will not only enhance safety and visibility in the evenings but also facilitate easier access to popular tourist destinations via upgraded beach access roads.

The governor inaugurated the commencement of upgrades for Watatu Watano and Mvureni beach access roads, highlighting her administration's commitment to enhancing infrastructure across Kwale County to drive economic growth for residents and tourists alike.

"Upon completion of these roads and street lights the increased traffic volume to and from the beaches will experience fewer delays in travel time," she said.

She hailed the transformative impact of the street lighting and road improvements in Diani, describing the area as a blend of sand, sea, and cultural richness that will redefine Kwale's tourism landscape. She emphasised that the new streetlights will enhance safety for beachgoers and support the vibrant tourism businesses operating around the clock.

"The installation of streetlights will enhance the safety and security for beachgoers and serve the buzzing 24-hour tourism businesses," she said.

The governor, accompanied by County Trade and Tourism Executive Michael Mutua and Social Services and Talent Management counterpart Francisca Kilonzo, reiterated her administration's commitment to promoting Kwale as a premier beach and holiday destination. She has reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring the timely completion of ongoing projects across the county.

"My dedication to improving and making the beach accessible is expected to have a significant impact, enhancing the tourism experience, attracting more visitors, and stimulating economic growth in Diani and the entire county," she said.

Recognised as the Woman of Excellence in Tourism 2024 by the Kenya Association of Women in Tourism, Fatuma sees the award as a validation of her efforts in fostering substantial growth in Kwale's tourism sector. She highlighted the accolade as recognition not only for Diani Beach's global appeal but also for Kenya's strides in promoting leisure tourism on the international stage.
