Bright Isiolo orphan risks not joining university over arrears at former school

Bonaya Hussein Fayo, a Meru School alumnus, is afraid he might not join Egerton University where he has received an admission to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Education.

An orphan from Merti, Isiolo County, who scored a B (Minus) in last year's KCSE exams risks not joining the university in August this year as his former school has refused to release his KCSE certificate over Sh35,000 fee arrears.

Bonaya Hussein Fayo, a Meru School alumnus, is afraid he might not join Egerton University where he has received an admission to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Education.

"The (Meru) school insists I must clear the balance to get the certificate which could delay my admission at the university," he said.

A relative, Duko Sicha, laid bare the struggle the lad had gone through following the demise of his mother while in Nursery school.

"The father abandoned the boy after the mother passed on but he persevered and performed well in KCPE exams at Macci primary and got an admission to Meru School," Duko said.

He said his Secondary education was majorly supported by bursaries as his grandparents who raised him were not able to raise the fees from Form One to Form Four.

"We are unable to clear the arrears to ease the process of him joining university which too is a tall order to the family," the relative noted.

Though government-sponsored, the student will require support to pursue the university education in the form of upkeep and fees.

"I am afraid I might not be able to pursue my dream and help my family out of poverty," a distraught Bonaya told journalists in Isiolo town.

The family has appealed to local elected leaders, Non-Governmental Organisations and well-wishers to come to their kin's aid to enable him to achieve his educational ambitions.
