42 Ugandan students, two embassy staff evacuated from Iran to Turkey

The Ugandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reassured citizens that efforts are ongoing to locate and support any remaining Ugandans still in Iran.

The government of Uganda has safely evacuated 42 of its nationals from Iran to Turkey.

Also evacuated are two diplomatic staff, in a move meant to protect its citizens following the outbreak of hostilities between Iran and the State of Israel on June 13, 2025, which significantly affected the security situation in the region.

In a statement, the government on Friday said the first group of evacuees was successfully received at the Bargarzan border of Turkey and Iran on Thursday, June 19, upon arrival via road.

Upon arrival at the border, the evacuees were received by Ugandan diplomatic officials on the ground.

"The 42 Ugandan students and two embassy staff are currently in transit to Istanbul, where they are scheduled to board a chartered commercial flight back home to Uganda," the government said.

"In an exemplary show of cooperation and responsiveness, the Republic of Turkey accepted Uganda's request to issue visas on arrival to the affected individuals, allowing their urgent transit and temporary entry into Turkish territory as part of the evacuation process," the state said.

The state added that the Centre will continue its operations until all Ugandans currently in the Islamic Republic of Iran are safely accounted for and repatriated.

Meanwhile, the Ugandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reassured citizens that efforts are ongoing to locate and support any remaining Ugandans still in Iran.

“Coordination teams remain in contact with those registered and are facilitating their safe exit and return home. We continue to closely monitor the situation and remain committed to the protection and well-being of all Ugandans abroad," the Ministry said on Friday.
