Six fan zones set up in Mombasa ahead of Harambee Stars' clash with Madagascar

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir said the fan zones are located at Changamwe Grounds in Changamwe, Uwanja wa Mbuzi in Nyali, Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mvita, Shell Beach in Likoni, Bangladesh Grounds in Jomvu and Bilima Ground in Kisauni.

Mombasa has established six new fan zones for residents to gather and cheer the Harambee Stars ahead of their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarterfinals against Madagascar.

In a statement, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir said the fan zones are located at Changamwe Grounds in Changamwe, Uwanja wa Mbuzi in Nyali, Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mvita, Shell Beach in Likoni, Bangladesh Grounds in Jomvu and Bilima Ground in Kisauni.

“From every corner of our county, fans are gathering at our official watch parties tomorrow to cheer on the Harambee Stars as they battle Madagascar in the CHAN 2024 quarterfinals. The energy is electric, the spirit is high, and together we are united behind our boys! Let’s paint the night red, green, black, and white. Victory is ours to claim. Tupatane ground,” Abdulswamad wrote on X.

He emphasised that the initiative is aimed not only at backing the Harambee Stars but also at fostering community spirit, unity and safe public celebrations during the highly anticipated clash.

The Harambee Stars, who have impressed with their performance in the tournament, are seeking a place in the semi-finals, and Mombasa fans are expected to turn out in thousands to cheer them on.

The highly anticipated match comes as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) approved additional seating at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, allowing 38,400 fans to attend. The move is a major boost for the Harambee Stars, who were supported by only 27,000 fans during their 1-0 victory over Zambia last weekend.

Fans without tickets can still enjoy the match at designated fan zones in Nairobi, which include Uhuru Park in the CBD, Jacaranda Grounds in Embakasi, DC Grounds in Kibera, Safari Rally Grounds in Kasarani, Dandora Stadium, Utalii Sports Grounds in Ruaraka, Pand Pieri Grounds in Githurai, and Baba Dogo Grounds in Baba Dogo.

Kiambu County has also announced four additional CHAN fan zones located in Kikuyu and Kiambu bus parks, Githunguri Stadium and Christina Gardens in Thika.

“We intend to bring the excitement and fun of watching Harambee Stars’ continued winning streak closer to the people, especially those who are not able to get to Kasarani Stadium,” Kiambu Sports CEC Osman Korar said.

Kenya will face Madagascar at 3:00 pm, East African Time (EAT), on Friday, while Tanzania meets two-time champions Morocco at 8:00 pm.

On Saturday, Sudan meets Algeria at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar, while Uganda plays Senegal at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala.

Winners will advance to the semi-finals on August 26 and 27, with the final set for Saturday, August 30, 2025.
