Kenyan elite security team foil terror plot, kill suspected Al-Shabaab terrorist in Garissa

Items recovered include a PKM machine gun, AK-47 rifle, pistol, communication radio, and an IED remote control.

The elite Special Operations Group (SOG) has killed an Al-Shabaab terrorist in Garissa while responding to reports by locals of militants attempting to plant Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along the Dadaab-Hagadera road, targeting civilians and security vehicles.

According to Counter Terrorism Policing Ke, the team tracked the four suspects, where one was killed and three others were injured during the fire exchange early Thursday morning and is in pursuit of the others.

"Items recovered include a PKM machine gun, AK-47 rifle, pistol, communication radio, and an IED remote control," the group said.

The operation adds to a series of successful missions in the region by SOG and other security agencies that have been aided by locals who shared timely and valuable information with the security agencies.

It came a day after Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen lauded security personnel nationwide for foiling various security threats.

The CS said numerous reports of potential threats within the security sector are received daily and foiled without public knowledge.

"When Improved Explosive Devices (IEDs) are detected and confiscated every time, it is as a result of monitoring and following security leads," said the CS in response to security incidents in parts of the country, especially the porous borders.

"Each part of this country has unique challenges. For the North Eastern region, it is the Al-Shabaab threat. We have implemented measures to counter potential attacks and protect the citizens."

Murkomen further called on Kenyans travelling in security operation areas to stick to the security protocols to avoid injuries and fatalities.

"This is the only way to limit attacks and arrest criminal elements operating on the security roads and borders," he urged during his "Upper Eastern Edition" of the Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Meru County on Wednesday.

The forums are aimed at arresting some of the emerging trends in crime through dialogue and intelligence sharing.
