K'naan's debut film, Mother Mother, adds another dimension to his artistic career, highlighting his commitment to storytelling and his Somali roots.

Somali-Canadian Grammy Award-winning rapper and singer K'naan Warsame is set to make his directorial debut with the film Mother Mother, which will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

The film joins 23 other titles representing more than 25 countries, including Argentina, Bangladesh, Colombia, Denmark, and Greece.

Mother Mother tells the story of Qalifo, a widow, and her son Asad, who live as pastoralists and camel herders in rural Somalia.

The narrative takes a dramatic turn when Asad travels to a nearby city and falls in love with Ifrah. However, their budding romance faces challenges when a young man from America also becomes enamoured with Ifrah.

The rivalry between Asad and the American visitor escalates, leading to a tragic murder. Qalifo's subsequent decision brings unexpected changes to their lives.

TIFF highlights this programme as a platform for emerging filmmakers worldwide, often serving as a launchpad for those who achieve critical acclaim.

"This programme has notably been a launching ground for filmmakers, many of whom have gone on to great acclaim," said TIFF in a statement.

K'naan first gained international recognition with his song Wavin' Flag, which became widely popular through charity singles and remixes and was the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

He has since been a prominent voice for the Somali community in Toronto and has been vocal about political issues in Somalia.

In 2007, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation invited him to discuss the changes in Somali courts, including the removal of the Islamic Courts Union.

K'naan criticised this action, expressing his support for the Islamic Courts Union and challenging Western critiques of Muslim governance.

He has also spoken out against the clan system in Somalia and its impact on Somali immigrant communities in Canada.

K'naan moved to Canada when he was 13, accompanied by his mother and three siblings. They initially joined relatives in New York before settling in Toronto.

In February, K'naan made history by winning the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Song for Social Change for his 2023 hit single Refugee.

The song, released as a tribute to refugees worldwide, received praise for its impactful lyrics and positive message. Many viewers were surprised and delighted when K'naan received the award during the ceremony on February 3.

K'naan's debut film, Mother Mother, adds another dimension to his artistic career, highlighting his commitment to storytelling and his Somali roots. The film's premiere at TIFF marks a great milestone for K'naan, who continues to excell in both music and film.
