The 21-year-old soared 13.92 metres to victory at the New Mexico Team Open held at the Convention Centre in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Saturday surpassing her previous national record of 13.66 meters set at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Lubbock, Texas, in February 2024.
At just 21 years old, Bii has consistently outperformed herself, steadily rewriting Kenya's triple jump records. Her journey to national prominence began in 2022 when she became the first Kenyan to qualify for the long jump at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia, where she also competed in the triple jump.
“It feels great to break my own record, and besides changing schools and coaches, my new school has some of the best teammates, who have been my support system,” said Bii.
In January 2024, while representing Oklahoma State University, Bii set a new national record in the triple jump at the Arkansas Invitational held at the Randal Tyson Indoor Centre in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Her leap of 13.49 meters broke the previous record of 13.05 meters, which had been held by Kenya Defence Forces' (KDF) Gloria Mulei since 2019.
Although she has achieved significant success, Bii remains focused on an even greater goal breaking into the elite 14-metre club and qualifying for the World Championships.
"My main aim is to hit the qualifying distance for the World Championships, and I’m putting in the work to make that happen as quickly as possible," she shared.
"My hop and step are on point, but my leap still falls short. Once I perfect that, I’m confident I’ll jump even further, and reaching 14 metres and the world standard will be within reach."
