Athletics Kenya names strong 58-member squad for 2025 Tokyo World Championships

The squad is headlined by Olympic and world champion Faith Kipyegon, who will double up in the women’s 1,500m and 5,000m, and Beatrice Chebet, who leads Kenya’s charge in the women’s 5,000m and 10,000m.
Athletics Kenya has officially named a strong 58-member squad for the 2025 World Athletics Championships set for Tokyo, scheduled to take place from September 13 to 21, 2025, hosted at the Japan National Stadium.
The squad is headlined by Olympic and world champion Faith Kipyegon, who will double up in the women’s 1,500m and 5,000m, and Beatrice Chebet, who leads Kenya’s charge in the women’s 5,000m and 10,000m.

They are joined by road queen Peres Jepchirchir, featuring in the marathon, while the ever-consistent Emmanuel Wanyonyi headlines the men’s 800m team alongside Nicholas Kebenei and Kelvin Loti.
Sprint powerhouse Ferdinand Omanyala will take to the track in the men’s 100m and also spearhead Kenya’s men’s 4x100m relay team, underlining the country’s growing presence in short sprints. Veteran Julius Yego makes a return in the men’s javelin, bringing experience in the field events.
The men’s distance events remain stacked with talent, with Timothy Cheruiyot, Reynold Cheruiyot, and rising star Phanuel Koech named in the 1,500m, while Edmund Serem and Abraham Kibiwott lead the steeplechase team. The 10,000m features familiar faces Edwin Kurgat, Ishmael Kipkurui, and Benson Kiplangat, while marathon stalwarts Vincent Kipkemoi, Dickson Chumba, and Kennedy Kimutai will fly the flag on the roads.
On the women’s side, world U20 champion Faith Cherotich, Doris Lemongole, and Pamela Kosgei form a youthful 3,000m steeplechase team, while Mary Moraa spearheads a competitive 800m squad that also includes Vivian Chebet and Sarah Moraa.
In the relays, Boniface Mweresa, Kelvin Kiprotich, and David Sanayek will be key in the men’s 4x400m team, while Mercy Chebet and Esther Mbagari anchor the women’s 4x400m lineup.
The selection highlights Kenya’s intent to blend youth with experience, with newcomers such as Faith Cherotich, Phanuel Koech, and Edmund Serem earning their first senior World Championship call-ups. Their presence alongside seasoned names like Kipyegon, Chebet, Moraa, and Yego underscores the country’s depth and ambition.
With 58 athletes across sprints, middle distance, long distance, steeplechase, relays, marathon, and field events, Team Kenya is gearing up to reaffirm its status as a global athletics powerhouse when the championships begin in Tokyo.
