Triple Kenyan power: Kipyegon, Chebet, Wanyonyi nominated for global athletics awards

According to the global athletics body, voting is currently underway to determine the two finalists in each category before the overall winners are announced.

Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet, and Emmanuel Wanyonyi have been shortlisted for the 2025 World Athletics Awards after a stellar season of record-breaking performances and global titles.

Chebet earned her nomination for Women’s Track Athlete of the Year after a dominant year in which she won both the 5000m and 10,000m titles at the World Championships in Tokyo in August, and set a 5000m world record in June.

Kipyegon was also shortlisted after reclaiming her 1500m world title in Tokyo, winning silver in the 5000m, and setting a new 1500m world record during the Diamond League meeting in Monaco in July.

Other nominees in the women’s category include the Netherlands’ Femke Bol, who went unbeaten in the 400m hurdles, capturing both the world and Diamond League titles.

The United States is represented by Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, who swept the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m titles at the World Championships, and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, who claimed the 400m and 4x400m world titles and remained undefeated throughout the season.

In the men’s category, Emmanuel Wanyonyi made the shortlist for Men’s Track Athlete of the Year after clinching the 800m titles at both the World Championships and Diamond League between August and September. He clocked four of the six fastest times recorded in 2025.

Tough competition

Wanyonyi faces tough competition from Rai Benjamin of the USA, the 400m hurdles world champion, and Jimmy Gressier of France, who claimed the 10,000m world title and 3000m Diamond League crown.

Also shortlisted are Americans Noah Lyles, the 200m and 4x100m world champion, and Cordell Tinch, who dominated the 110m hurdles to win both world and Diamond League titles.

“The nominations reflect some of the standout performances achieved during another memorable year for the sport, which peaked with the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25,” said World Athletics in a statement on Monday.

According to the global athletics body, voting is currently underway to determine the two finalists in each category before the overall winners are announced.

“The vote to determine the Track Athlete of the Year finalists is now open on World Athletics social media platforms – on Facebook, Instagram and X. It will close on 19 October,” said World Athletics.

“The nominees for the Field Athlete of the Year awards will be announced on 20 October, and the nominees for the Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year awards will be announced on 27 October. The overall women’s and men’s World Athlete of the Year award winners will be selected from among the track, field and out-of-stadium category winners.”
