Eastleigh hosts first barista competition, showcasing top local coffee talent
Each participant had ten minutes to prepare their coffee creations, showcasing their skills in a high-stakes setting.
Business Bay Square Mall in Eastleigh hosted its inaugural Barista Competition on Friday evening, drawing ten local coffee shops and restaurants. Starting at 5 pm and running until 10:30 pm, the event featured top baristas from establishments like Latte Lounge, Java House, and Artcafe, all vying for the title of Grand Champion.
The competition provided a dynamic platform for baristas to display their expertise, creativity, and passion for coffee. With a packed audience eagerly watching, the event was judged by both sensory and technical experts who evaluated taste, presentation, and machine proficiency.

Each participant had ten minutes to prepare their coffee creations, showcasing their skills in a high-stakes setting.
In the espresso category, the winner was Mac Jordan from Beirut Restaurant. The milk beverage category was won by Oscar Nyamore from Shawa Cafe. For technical proficiency, Rodney Ngaira from Artcafe was recognised for his skill in handling the coffee machine. The overall winner of the competition was Joseph Ireri from Java House.
Catherine Kilonzo, one of the judges, commented on the event, noting that it was well-coordinated for a first-time competition in Eastleigh. She expressed her satisfaction with the growing coffee culture in the area.
"This being the first-ever Barista competition in Eastleigh, it was fantastic. People showed up, and we look forward to having more of these kinds of competitions in the future," said Catherine. She emphasised that her focus was on the baristas' ability to operate the coffee-making machines effectively.
Joseph Ireri, the overall winner, shared his excitement with The Eastleigh Voice, expressing his appreciation for the event and his optimism for the future of the coffee business in the mall.
"I am so happy to have won, and I'm very sure this mall is going to take the coffee business to the next level," said Ireri.
Another participant, Brian Ochieng from Latte Lounge, also expressed his delight. Ochieng won in the signature drink category with his creation known as "Cloud Nine." He described the drink as a blend of two creams mixed with coffee and milk.
"I managed to win, and I am so happy, I am so excited," said Ochieng.
