Speaking after the historic victory at a packed Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, McCarthy revealed his surprise choice to deploy centre-back Manzur Suleiman in a defensive midfield role—a move that proved instrumental in Kenya’s successful CHAN debut.

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has shed light on the bold tactical decision that played a pivotal role in Kenya’s 1–0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening Group A match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Speaking after the historic victory at a packed Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, McCarthy revealed his surprise choice to deploy centre-back Manzur Suleiman in a defensive midfield role—a move that proved instrumental in Kenya’s successful CHAN debut.

“I initially considered playing him at left-back based on what I saw in our friendlies,” McCarthy revealed. “But after analysing his attributes, I felt he was a perfect fit in midfield. He’s young, energetic, and brave — just what we needed to disrupt DR Congo’s game plan. He was one of our best players today, no doubt.”

Standout performance

Manzur delivered a standout performance, providing crucial cover for the defence and allowing Kenya’s more attack-minded midfielders the freedom to push forward.

“Alpha Onyango is very comfortable on the ball and can play clean, progressive passes. Austine Odhiambo is creative and can score,” McCarthy added. “Having Manzur do the dirty work behind them was key. He did one hell of a job protecting our back four — that’s exactly what we needed.”

The tactical adjustment paid off, helping to neutralise DR Congo’s attacking threat and setting the foundation for Kenya’s decisive moment—Odhiambo’s well-timed goal late in the first half that sealed the hard-fought 1–0 win.

The result not only marked a memorable CHAN debut for the Harambee Stars but also gave them a strong start in the tournament, which is jointly hosted by Tanzania and Uganda.
