Boda boda association calls for arrest of suspects in Thika Road vehicle torching

The incident, which caused a major traffic snarl-up near the Survey area, drew sharp condemnation from the association, which described the attack as reckless and a setback to efforts aimed at instilling discipline in the sector.

The Boda boda Safety Association of Kenya (BAK) has called for the arrest of individuals behind the torching of a vehicle along Thika Road after it was involved in a collision with a rider on Saturday evening.

The incident, which caused a major traffic snarl-up near the Survey area, drew sharp condemnation from the association, which described the attack as reckless and a setback to efforts aimed at instilling discipline in the sector.

A video circulating online showed a huge flame from the burnt vehicle as several boda boda riders stood nearby watching.

In a statement, BAK National Executive Chairman Kevin Mubadi termed the attack an act of lawlessness that should not be tolerated.

“BAK strongly condemns the unfortunate incident on Thika Road where a vehicle was torched following a collision with a boda boda rider. While we deeply sympathise with the rider involved in the accident, we firmly reiterate that violence, destruction of property, and taking the law into one’s own hands are unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” he said.

Mubadi insisted that all those who participated in the incident must face justice.

“BAK confirms that all individuals involved in this unfortunate act of lawlessness must be arrested and prosecuted to serve as an example. Such behaviour not only tarnishes the image of our sector but also endangers the lives of innocent Kenyans and undermines efforts to professionalise the boda boda industry,” he said.

The association further cautioned riders against resorting to mob justice whenever accidents occur, instead urging them to follow due process.

“As an association, we emphasise that we do not advocate for chaos after an accident. Proper legal and safety procedures must always be followed. Justice must be sought through lawful channels. In case of accidents, the police, medical services, and insurance processes must be allowed to take their course,” BAK said.

Reaffirming its mission to promote order, safety and professionalism, BAK urged riders nationwide to exercise restraint and respect the rule of law.

“Peace, safety and discipline remain at the core of BAK’s mission in transforming the boda boda sector. We urge all boda boda riders across the country to exercise restraint, respect the law, and avoid actions that may escalate conflicts or bring disrepute to the sector. We also call upon law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively in handling this matter. Together, we can build a safer and more respected boda boda industry in Kenya,” read the statement.

The condemnation comes amid public concern over repeated cases of boda boda-related mob attacks, with stakeholders warning that such incidents threaten road safety and the sector’s reputation.
