Tragedy as seven- storey building collapses in Rongo

The cause of the collapse is still unclear and the exact number of people inside the building at the time remains unknown.
A seven-storey building under construction collapsed on Christmas Day, near the Rongo weighbridge in Rongo town leaving scores feared dead.
Distress calls from individuals trapped under the rubble are reported to have been heard, raising concerns from the eyewitnesses.

A structure has collapsed in Rongo Subcounty, Migori, with an unknown number of people feared trapped.

Emergency responders, including the Migori County Fire Brigade, are on-site searching for survivors in collaboration with members of the public. Volunteers are working tirelessly with limited tools to save those trapped.
Rongo Sub-County Police Commander Salim Fundi said that rescue efforts are currently ongoing.
He noted that the exact number of people still trapped in the rubble remains unknown after the incident, which occurred at around 3 pm
“An excavator has been brought to help in rescuing those trapped,” said Fundi.
Migori County Secretary Oscar Olima, who arrived at the scene with the county’s emergency response team, confirmed that one woman had already been rescued and taken to Migori County Referral Hospital for treatment.
