Saccos regulatory agency releases list of institutions licensed to operate in Kenya

These saccos are said to have met the necessary regulatory requirements and are authorised to operate from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025.
The Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) has released its list of licensed and authorised savings and credit cooperatives (saccos) for the year 2025, outlining the institutions approved to operate in the country.
The list released on Tuesday categorises saccos into three groups: those licensed to conduct deposit-taking business, those authorised for non-deposit-taking business, and those whose authorisation has expired.

A total of 178 saccos have been granted licenses to engage in deposit-taking activities.
These saccos are said to have met the necessary regulatory requirements and are authorised to operate from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025.
This ensures that these saccos can continue to provide essential financial services to their members while adhering to set guidelines and regulations.
Also, 177 saccos have been authorised to operate as non-deposit-taking saccos.
These organisations are allowed to conduct their specified business activities, but they are not permitted to accept deposits from members.
They are also authorised to continue their operations for the same period, from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025.
However, SASRA has said that two saccos failed to apply for the renewal of their authorisation before the December 31, 2024 deadline.
As a result, their authorisation has automatically been revoked, and they are prohibited from engaging in any regulated sacco business starting from January 1, 2025.
These saccos are now listed in Schedule III and are no longer allowed to carry out any regulated activities.
