Ethiopian Airlines places Africa's first Boeing 777X order

The B777X-9 has a capacity of 50 business class and 390 economy class seats, with a total of 440 seats, making it the largest aircraft in the history of Ethiopian Airlines.

Ethiopian Airlines has signed a historic deal allowing it to acquire the continent's first Boeing 777X-9.

The Ethiopian Airlines Group which has been expanding its operations and is one of the leading airlines in Africa signed a memorandum for the delivery of the Boeing plane that is expected to be a game changer in the continent's aviation industry.

The signing ceremony took place on Monday in Addis Ababa, attended by Ethiopian government officials, Ethiopian Airlines Executive Management, and Boeing Senior Management.

"This move will enable us to provide unparalleled service and comfort to our passengers whereby demonstrating our dedication to staying at the forefront of aviation technology," Ethiopian Airlines said.

Mesfin Tasew, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, and Brad McMullen, Boeing's senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing, signed the agreement at the Skylight Hotel.

Among those present were United States Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Jose Massinga and Ethiopia's Commander in Chief of Air Force Lieutenant General Yilma Merdassa.

The B777X-9 has a capacity of 50 business class and 390 economy class seats, with a total of 440 seats, making it the largest aircraft in the history of Ethiopian Airlines.

It will join Ethiopian Airlines' fleet that has been increasing each year despite other national airlines in the continent getting plagued with debts and calls for bailouts.
