Joho: My priority will be to eliminate cartels in mining sector

The nominee gave an instance whereby companies take over 40 years of mapping for minerals, which he says should not be the case, noting that it should take a shorter period.

Former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has vowed to crack the mining cartels if approved as the next Cabinet Secretary for Mining.

While appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments on Sunday, Joho told the legislators that there was a 'greater cartel' in the mining sector, emphasising that it was time the industry stopped being a speculation market.

"There are greater cartels in the mining industry; if you approve me, that is where I begin. The mining industry in Kenya cannot be a market of speculators," Joho said.

The nominee gave an instance whereby companies take over 40 years of mapping for minerals, which he says should not be the case, noting that it should take a shorter period.

Former Mining CS Salim Mvurya had also vowed to implement reforms in the mining sector after being vetted in October 2022.

Part of this he said, will be to do away with the cartels who have been dominating the sector.

Mvurya said the ministry would put down the rules and regulations that each investor in the mining sector will comply with.

Following his nomination, Joho showed gratitude to President William saying he would give it his best if approved.

Facing the vetting committee, Joho was questioned about his educational background and clarified that he began working before pursuing his academic qualifications later in life.

He was replying to questions from Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah, who asked him about his educational history.

In a light-hearted reply, Ichung'wah mentioned that many Kenyans were astonished to learn that Joho speaks English.

The nominee admitted that he scored a D- in his KCSE exams but explained that he has since "turned it around" and earned two degrees.

The former Mombasa governor shared his career path, mentioning that he is currently pursuing a Master's Degree at the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

"It is a program on public leadership credentials. It is a pathway to attain a mid-career master's degree in public administration," Joho told MPs vetting him for the job.
