Ivory Coast secured a narrow 2-1 win against Mali, advancing to the semifinals where they are set to face DR Congo

In a riveting quarterfinal encounter at the 2023 AFCON, Ivory Coast emerged victorious against Mali with a narrow 2-1 win, securing their spot in the highly anticipated semifinals. The match, held at an electrifying stadium, showcased a roller-coaster of emotions, dramatic twists, and exceptional performances from both sides.

Mali stormed into the opening minutes with an evident dominance, and Lassine Sinayoko proved to be a relentless force, causing headaches for Ivory Coast defenders. The 11th minute brought a moment of anxiety for Ivory Coast as Kouakou Kossounou handled the ball in the box. However, after a meticulous VAR review, the referee overturned the decision, judging a Mali player to be offside during the incident.

Despite the early scare, Kouakou Kossounou found himself in hot water again in the 15th minute, this time fouling Sinayoko in the box. Adama Traore stepped up for the resulting free-kick, but Ivory Coast goalkeeper Djigui Diarra made a crucial save, denying Mali the lead.

The game took a dramatic turn in the 43rd minute when Kossounou received his second yellow card, leading to his dismissal from the field. Ivory Coast had to adapt quickly, making an immediate tactical change as Nicolas Pepe was substituted out for Wilfried Singo.

As the second half commenced, Ivory Coast continued to adjust their strategy, making substitutions with Haller and Wily Koume Aurier making way for fresh legs. In the 61st minute, Diabate entered the game, replacing Traore, injecting new energy into the Ivory Coast lineup.

Mali seized the opportunity in the 71st minute as Dorgeles Nene unleashed a stunning strike from outside the box, giving his team the lead. However, Ivory Coast showcased resilience, and in the 89th minute, Simon Andigra, who plies his trade for Brighton in the English Premier League, leveled the score with a tap-in from the box, forcing the match into extra time.

The additional 30 minutes proved to be just as intense, with Sebastien Haller's powerful header hitting the bar in the 95th minute. However, it was Oumar Diakité who emerged as the hero for Côte d'Ivoire, securing the victory in the very final play of the game.

Ivory Coast's triumph against Mali was a testament to their resilience, adaptability, and sheer determination. As they move on to the semifinals, fans eagerly anticipate more thrilling moments and exceptional performances in the quest for AFCON glory.
