Kenya confident ahead of CHAN 2024 kickoff

With CHAN 2024 just weeks away, Kenya has declared full readiness to co-host the landmark tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania, marking a significant moment for East African football.

Kenya has reaffirmed its preparedness to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), a tournament that, for the first time, will be jointly held by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from August 2 to 30.

The competition, which brings together 19 national teams featuring only home-based players, is not just about football - it marks East Africa’s biggest statement yet on unity, capability, and ambition ahead of hosting AFCON 2027.

Kenya will stage all Group A matches at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, with Harambee Stars kicking off their debut campaign against DR Congo on August 3. Angola and Morocco complete the group.

Nicholas Musonye, Chair of the Local Organising Committee, said CAF inspections gave Kenya a “clean bill of health,” with venues 98% ready. “Only minor touch-ups remain. We’ve proved the doubters wrong,” he said.

Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed the government’s role in logistics, including gazetting Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) exemptions to ease entry for teams and visitors. Focus now shifts to a major security orientation on July 16.

Mvurya urged national pride, calling CHAN a chance to showcase Kenya’s growth in sports, tourism, and trade. “This is our moment,” he said.

Matches will also be played at Uganda’s Mandela National Stadium, Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, and Zanzibar’s Amaan Stadium. The tournament is viewed as a key test for the region ahead of AFCON 2027.
