Ruto, Raila and leaders unite in praise for Harambee Stars despite 'heartbreaking' loss
President William Ruto hailed the Harambee Stars for lifting the nation’s spirit and inspiring hope, urging that lessons from the tournament guide preparations for an even brighter future, including the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.
Harambee Stars may have bowed out of CHAN 2024 at the quarter-final stage, but their spirited performance has earned them widespread praise from leaders, football officials, and fans alike.
On Friday, the team pushed Madagascar to the limit, only to lose 4-3 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw over 120 minutes. Alphonce Omija gave Kenya hope with a powerful header early in the second half, sparking loud cheers from the Kasarani crowd.

Despite early successful penalties from Siraj Mohammed, Daniel Sakari, and Sylvester Owino, Kenya’s hopes were dashed when Omija missed his kick, allowing Madagascar to secure victory.
Despite the heartbreak, the team’s courage, resilience, and tactical discipline were celebrated.
President William Ruto hailed the Harambee Stars for lifting the nation’s spirit and inspiring hope, urging that lessons from the tournament guide preparations for an even brighter future, including the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.
"We bowed out at the quarter-finals — but we fought valiantly to the very end. To lose in the lottery of penalties is no dishonour; to push the contest to such a finish is itself a badge of greatness," Ruto said in a statement.
"We congratulate Madagascar on their victory. Yet throughout this tournament, our boys displayed resilience, grit, and an indomitable will. Every Kenyan is proud of you. You have united the country, given us moments of joy, and lifted our hopes."

Other leaders also lauded the team’s historic debut and the unity they brought to the country.
"Today was just a bad day for Harambee Stars, but as debutants from a tough group, they never disappointed. We are proud of their performance, and CHAN 2024 will be a springboard as we prepare for AFCON 2027," said Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang'ula.
Sports CS Salim Mvurya applauded the tactical discipline, resilience, and unyielding spirit of the side.
"In our debut at CHAN 2024, you have written history and shown the world that Kenya’s talent is undeniable. Though the journey ends here, you walk away as winners, proving our resilience, our heart, and our unyielding belief that we belong at the very top. This moment is not an ending, but the beginning of a brighter future for Kenyan football," he said.
He also thanked Kenyans for showing up in the stadium to support Harambee Stars. "To Kenyans everywhere, you have risen with pride and passion, filling the stadiums and fan zones with unshakable support. Together, we have displayed to the world our love for football and our readiness to host the grandest of stages."
Former Chief Justice David Maraga thanked the players for inspiring nationalism and giving Kenyans a sense of pride, while former Prime Minister Raila Odinga congratulated the team for making the nation proud.

Harambee Stars coach Benny McCarthy reflected on the pressure of the match: “I understand people are very disappointed. Myself, the team, the players, everyone is disappointed, but we were not meant to be in the first place. After DRC, Angola, Morocco, and Zambia, you get through that group, then you count your blessings. Unfortunately, the game that I really thought we should win, we fumbled.”
He praised his players for navigating a tough group and acknowledged the immense effort and commitment shown throughout the tournament.
