Mutuini Hospital set to become Nairobi's fourth Level 5 facility

Mutuini Hospital in Dagoretti South will undergo a significant transformation to lessen its over-reliance on major referral hospitals in Nairobi.
To ease pressure on the city's healthcare system and provide specialised services closer to the community, the hospital will be upgraded to a Level 5 health facility.

Currently, there are only three Level 5 hospitals in Nairobi: Mbagathi Hospital, Mama Lucy Hospital, and Mama Margaret Hospital.
However, with the rising number of patients seeking care, Mutuini Hospital will soon join the ranks of these vital healthcare facilities.
Fredrick Obwanda, the Chief Executive Officer of Mutuini Hospital, revealed that the hospital is in the midst of a massive expansion that will increase its bed capacity from 40 to 400.
This expansion will also see the creation of crucial departments, including an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a High Dependency Unit (HDU), and specialised clinics to ensure the hospital can meet the growing demand for services.
"This year, the hospital will undergo a massive expansion, elevating it to a Level 5 facility," Obwanda said.
"We have a new 400-bed facility under construction, which will be a huge addition as we currently have only 40 beds. When completed, we'll have an expanded outpatient department to serve more patients efficiently."
Increased patients
Currently, with 30 doctors, Mutuini Hospital is seeing an increasing number of patients each day. The expanded facility will allow the hospital to better meet this demand, improving care and efficiency.
The hospital's expansion will include several new key services. These include a larger pharmacy, expanded laboratories, a specialised paediatrics unit, a gynaecology department, a renal unit, and a nutrition clinic.
The upgraded hospital will also offer services such as chemotherapy, pathology, forensic services, and a mortuary, further ensuring that the community has access to comprehensive healthcare close to home.
Once completed, Mutuini Hospital will help relieve the strain on major referral hospitals in Nairobi by providing specialised treatment within reach for many residents.
This expansion is also expected to play a key role in decongesting other hospitals by accommodating a greater number of patients in need of care.
The ambitious expansion project has received strong backing from Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja's administration, which has allocated Sh238 million in the FY2024-2025 budget to facilitate the upgrade.
Nairobi's Level 5 hospitals are county referral centres that cater to a wide range of medical needs.
To meet Level 5 standards, a hospital must have a minimum capacity of 100 beds, offer 24-hour medical services, and provide specialised care, including surgical, paediatric, and gynaecological services.
In addition to expanding the physical capacity of Mutuini Hospital, the project will ensure the facility meets all necessary staffing and infrastructure requirements.
This includes hiring over 100 clinical officers, as well as specialists such as anaesthesiologists, cardiologists, general surgeons, and paediatricians.
By upgrading Mutuini Hospital, Nairobi is not only improving healthcare access for residents but also relieving pressure on already overwhelmed hospitals in the city.
With these developments, residents of Dagoretti South and surrounding areas will have access to high-quality medical care, bringing much-needed relief to the growing healthcare demands in Nairobi.
