Woman, 20, stabbed to death in Nairobi's Kinyango slum

Police say the attacker, who is known to the family as her boyfriend, is still at large and efforts to trace him are ongoing.

Police are looking for a man who allegedly stabbed his 20-year-old girlfriend to death in Kinyango slum, Nairobi.

A report says a wounded Serah Ndunge Musyoki was found in her house on Sunday night and rushed to the Mother and Child Hospital along Yusuf Haji Road (First Avenue) in Eastleigh. Musyoki, who had multiple stab wounds in the chest, died while being attended to.

Police say the attacker was known to Musyoki's family as her boyfriend, and that they were the only ones in the house at the time of the attack. The motive is unknown.

The body was taken to a nearby mortuary pending an autopsy.

The incident comes a day after thousands of women in Nairobi and several other counties staged protests to denounce rising cases of femicide in Kenya. The marches followed the brutal killings of Starlet Wahu and Rita Waeni, and a third victim identified only as Malkia.

At the protests, women's groups urged President William Ruto to declare femicide "a national emergency and a threat to national security" , saying it is engrained in the community.

Amnesty International Kenya says there have been more than 10 cases of femicide since the start of January. In a statement on Friday, the organisation noted that violence is not normal and must never be made so by silence.

“Between 2016 and 2023, over 500 women have been killed. The majority of those murdered were below the age of 35 years and were killed by their partners or people known to them,”Amnesty said in a statement.

A report conducted by Africa Uncensored indicates that cases of femicide have been on the rise, with 20 reported in 2016, at least 57 in 2017 and the highest number - 95 - in 2018. Out of the reported cases, only 15 per cent were perpetrated by strangers to the victims.
