The event, attended by local leaders led by Kamukunji Member of Parliament, Yusuf Hassan, witnessed the participation from a diverse group of leaders. Hon Yusuf said “I extend my gratitude to the wider Kamukunji and Eastleigh residents who braved the cold morning weather to turn up for the event. I urge my constituents to take good care of the planted trees." In his speech, Yusuf highlighted, "The changing weather patterns resulting in adverse conditions, particularly the current floods in North Eastern, are attributed to environmental degradation. Therefore, planting trees is one of the measures that will reverse these environmental catastrophes."He added. Yusuf also noted that the tree-planting initiative extended to 14 different locations within Kamukunji.

The Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) of Kamukunji Sub-County, as well as Eastleigh North MCA Hon Dabar, echoed the sentiment of unity and purpose. Dabar expressed gratitude for the timely rains, deeming them a blessing, and urged the residents to continue this vital exercise. The Kamukunji Sub-County DCC went ahead to reveal that 4,000 seedlings were planted today.
Additionally, Omar Hussein, Secretary General of the Eastleigh Business District Association Business Development, emphasized the day's significance, stating, "Today is an important day; the true meaning of life is to plant trees. I thank the National government for this great initiative and urge the government to continue doing the same every year."
From the historic Kamukunji grounds, the residents, alongside their leaders, planted seedlings at the junction between Yusuf Haji Avenue and General Waruingi in the Eastleigh business district. This event marks the beginning of a journey towards a greener and more sustainable Nairobi City. Recognizing the urgent need to address climate challenges, I made the connection between our recurrent droughts, the ongoing El Niño rains causing devastating floods, and the destructive impact of humanity on our environment. I emphasized the urgency and importance of consistent tree planting as the solution to combat the negative aspects of climate change, not just today but every day.
