Kitui Village fire victims receive aid in wake of tragic inferno

Residents noted that the financial aid, equivalent to the average monthly rent in the area, would be crucial in helping families restart their lives.
Victims of the fire that ravaged Kitui Village in Pumwani Ward on Tuesday night have received essential support, including food, non-food items, and financial assistance. The aid was delivered on Thursday evening by the office of Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan and Riadha Mosque.
The fire, which resulted in the loss of seven lives, destroyed homes and left many residents without belongings. Victims received food items such as rice, corn flour, vegetable oil, beans, sugar, and wheat flour.

Non-food essentials like cooking utensils, blankets, mattresses, and iron sheets were also distributed. Additionally, each affected family was given Sh1,500 in cash.

Some landlords have begun rebuilding their homes using the donated iron sheets. Paul Nzonza, one of the landlords, expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the materials would help in completing the reconstruction.
Riadha Mosque, in collaboration with other mosques such as Al Amiin, played a key role in organising the assistance.
Sheikh Zakaria, Chairman of Riadha Mosque, emphasised the importance of supporting community members during such disasters, aligning with Islamic teachings.
"They are our people, and when we heard of the disaster, we came to offer our assistance as required by our faith and beliefs," said Sheikh Zakaria, who was accompanied by several Ulamaas during the distribution.

Blankets and mattresses provided by the Nairobi County Government further addressed immediate needs.
Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan described the fire as the deadliest incident in the area during his tenure. Speaking after visiting the site on Wednesday, he acknowledged the scale of the disaster and emphasised the need to find solutions for the affected families.
Efforts to rebuild Kitui Village are ongoing, with affected residents and community organisations working together to restore normalcy. Many victims have started adjusting to their new circumstances, bolstered by the aid received.
