Duale pledges to revive Michuki's environmental plan

Aden Duale, the new Environment Cabinet Secretary, has committed to reviving the vision of his predecessor, John Michuki.

Duale stated on Monday that his priorities include the preservation of rivers and forests, as well as the broader goal of greening the country.

He made these remarks during the handover ceremony at Mazingira House in Nairobi, where he officially took over the environmental docket from Soipan Tuya, who has been appointed as the Defence Cabinet Secretary. 

In his speech, Duale emphasised his deep understanding of environmental laws and his determination to enforce them.

He added that one of his primary goals is to clean up Nairobi's contaminated rivers, which are the result of industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and private entity encroachment.

The CS also emphasised that Nairobi, as the host city for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), must work to restore its reputation as a green city.

To achieve this, he plans to collaborate with Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to rejuvenate the city's green spaces.

Duale also issued a stern warning to those who have encroached on forested areas and riparian zones, stating that such activities would not be tolerated. 

"We cannot allow the illegal use of riparian land for construction or farming," he said.

He stressed the importance of adhering to the law and highlighted the need for the removal of unauthorised dumpsites along the banks of the Nairobi River as part of the water body's restoration efforts.

Duale expressed his commitment to addressing noise pollution in the city in addition to river rehabilitation.  He urged Matatu operators to install waste bins in their vehicles as part of broader efforts to manage the city's garbage problem.

In a post on his social media accounts, Duale stated that he would balance economic growth with environmental preservation.

"Our focus will be on balancing economic growth with environmental preservation, ensuring Kenya's continued leadership in sustainable practices," he said.

He further mentioned the importance of engaging various stakeholders, including local communities and private sector partners, to develop inclusive environmental strategies.
